Early Bird – 13th April

Frustrating day, Definitely Red falling early was costly and didn’t give us any clues. Got a great price on Kings Rock only for it to run a bit of a stinker, despite being favourite. Not sure all was well with the horse but could now be one who continually flatters to deceive and never fulfils the potential it has shown. Distime failed to get into the race eventually completing in 8th.

1:45 Aintree – Ivanovich Gorbatov

Well backed the week before Cheltenham, though a big negative for me, especially with the sire who has a horrendous record at the Festival. Therefore it wasn’t a big surprise to see it take a walk in the market, eventually ending up at 25/1! Ran like a 25/1 shot as well when finishing well beat. Handicapper is beginning to take a chance though with a horse once rated in the 150s, competing off 145 here. Tried in a first time hood, if it is enough to perk the horse up then it is more than capable of winning off this mark.

2:20 Aintree – Style De Garde

Already advised Vision Des Flos for this race at 10/1 and is now a best price of half that. Once again showing that great value can be had even from a few days before the race. Already having the value means we can still back another horse in the race that I am keeping an eye on. That is Style De Garde who caught my eye in the Fred Winter, racing wide throughout and staying on well at the finish. Still lightly raced with just three runs to its name in the UK and not seen out until late December, it suggested there was plenty more to come. With another big field there is plenty of options for cover and though I have doubts about the strength of the Fred Winter form this could be the exception.

2:50 Aintree – Black Corton

Looks a very hot novice chase, arguably even stronger than what we saw at Cheltenham in the RSA. It is one that instead I will take a chance on a horse who under performed in Black Corton. Having been low over its fences it seemed to hit the top of several of them which told at the end of the race. Prior to that it had looked very good and is still on a par with the main contenders here on RPR. Holds Elegant Escape and Ms Parfois on previous form, the easier fences of Aintree may be more in its favour here.

4:05 Aintree – Mystifiable

We are already on Bouvreuil though it remains to be seen if the money comes for that. It is Mystifiable that stands out to me though off bottom weight. 4th in the Grand Sefton on first try over the National fences, it seemed to take to them very well. Was nibbled in the market that day also so clearly a good run was expected. Is down to its last winning mark just under a year ago and though a 10yo it doesn’t have that many miles on the clock. Trainer is very adept with horses like this and he has Paddy Brennan riding at his minimum weight. Could do with the ground drying out more though it coped with the heavy in the Grand Sefton. Did seem to struggle to get home that day so better ground would help in that respect whilst its last two wins have come on good and good to soft ground. Either way though I am hopeful of it rewarding a place at least.
