Early Bird – 1st August

Great start to the week as Alfarris stayed on well to win having advised at 7/1 whilst we also landed a place with Dream Walker as it stayed on for 5th, once again highlighting the importance of betting with the extra places.

Seem to be always tipping this horse up though to be fair it always seems to run its race as well. This is considerably easier contest though than what it has been competing in so far this season, having been placed in a pair of class 2 handicaps. Admittedly has crept up the handicap but taking its Ascot Stakes handicap form over this trip as a guide it finished behind 4 potentially well handicapped Mullins horses. Stays really well, yard in great form, there is a worry that Lil Rockerfeller who has been well supported could be a blot in the handicap having not raced on the flat for over 3 years but I will always side with proven over potential.

With the places terms on offer it should certainly give us a good chance to make this race pay. Not easy though which is probably why the bookies are happy to lay more places. I like the look of Manton Grange who is still lightly raced for the year compared to some of these. Just the one run this turf season, when 7th at Doncaster in a race won by a horse I like in Spanish City. Considering it was conceding fitness to most of its rivals and the fact it paid to be handy that day at Newmarket, it was a pretty decent effort to finish 7th though beaten less than 3 lengths. Has a fine record of 311 on right handed tracks with its last win rather impressive at Kempton as you don’t often see horses pick up like that did on the surface around there. Only 7lb higher it suggests there could be more to come off its mark as it should be hard for the handicapper to pin down. Should get the strong pace it likes to chase, if it gets the luck in running it can go well for a yard and jockey in form.

Not often I get involved in maiden contests, generally preferring my selections to have winning form already. However, this looks decent value in a race where it is the clear horse on Racing Post Ratings. The form of its races have worked out also with the first three home on its debut all winning since along with the horse that beat it last time. Been given a few weeks break after two quick races, the yard is in form and unless a newcomer shows something dramatic or another horse improves significantly on what it has shown so far then Golden Force will take all the beating.
