Early Bird – 21st August

Booooom, advised 16/1 winner with Udododontdou gives us a great return on the day and more than makes up for the disappointment of Saturday. Unlucky not to make it a great double as Family Fortune, despite drifting to 11/1 SP, stayed on well to finish 2nd again, not getting to the well backed winner who I suggested was the danger. Slight worry that Family Fortune is becoming a horse who flatters to deceive, though not sure the race was still run to suit, with it better when they go a strong gallop early. Certainly still looks capable at a price at this level and over this trip.

I was a fan of Give It Some Teddy, but it was hard not to be impressed with the way this horse pulled clear of that rival and then went and won in a head to head at York over 1m 2f. Has 9lb more in comparison but did beat it by 6 lengths and could well be more to come as a 3yo. Didn’t get the breaks at Goodwood, as is often the case for so many there, the biggest concern for me here is the ground as it is unproven when racing ground with give. Trip is fine, it is a competitive race but I am hopeful it will give us a good run for our money.

Ok, maybe this is a sign of confidence having had a 16/1 winner, but it is not often a horse I am following can be backed at 66/1 and though its recent form is poor, there are excuses for that. Still lightly raced with just the five runs, on its second start it finished 2nd in a race that worked out well. The winner has finished runner up on both its starts since in handicap company and is rated 82. The 3rd won a handicap on its next start off a mark of 76 whilst the 4th won next time off 71. If able to return to this kind of form on the a/w then it surely has a good chance now down to an official rating of just 70. Travelled over to Ireland for its third run when going off not unfancied at 5/1 but failed to pick up there before then going lame at Kempton. Kept off the track for 5 months it then returned to the course, to turf for the first time, dropped in trip and under a 7lb claimer where it was 33/1 and never put in the race. Drops 5lb in weight from that run, professional jockey booked and steps back up in trip on the a/w. Has a good draw here, I am expecting a better run than seen of late and hopefully could outrun its odds.
