Open handicap in which there is no standout candidate, though First Nation has been strong in the betting which is always a positive sign for a Godolphin horse. I am happy to chance the only 3yo in the field who gets 9lb age allowance. Lightly raced after only 5 starts, he hacked up on his third run in a novice race. Not disgraced next time in a group 3 taking on horses far more experienced at that level, it was then third in a handicap when dropped in trip to 1m 2f, staying on late up the Newmarket hill without getting competitive. Will appreciate the return to 1m 4f and on fast ground and coming from a yard that progresses their horses so well it has a nice chance.

Gimcrack doesn’t look as strong as in past years so with four last time out winners and a couple with group experience then this race could go anywhere. That is why I am happy to go with Showout. Has a very similar profile to Space Traveller, just the one more run, but has a faster topspeed and the same RPR. Both are progressing and won novice events easy last time out. However, Showout is three times the price of Space Traveller, from a yard that did us proud with a place today and still open to plenty of improvement.

A race that seems to revolve around Battaash and Blue Point according to the betting and if either of them can reproduce its recent form then will take a lot of beating. However, I think there can still be some value had betting against the pair. Battaash can get worked up in the preliminaries and actually ran its worst race of last year in this race. Blue Point is not the most consistent and has flopped twice this year already. So, I turn to Mabs Cross whose record over 5f on good to firm ground reads 1133 including a 3rd at group 1 level, finishing only 2 lengths behind Blue Point. Loves a strong pace to chase which looks nailed on here, she is drawn in the middle of the field so will get plenty of cover. It is quite possible the principles will go off too hard and she should be stating on late to pick up the pieces.
