Early Bird – 28th July

A good week off but we are back for an action packed day of racing.

1:50 Ascot

2pt win Royal Intervention @ 15/8 widely available

Looks ‘banker’ material having romped away to win a decent looking Newmarket listed race, quickly getting to the front despite missing the start slightly and powering away from the field. Won in a decent time as well, I like the fact it has been given a good break of a month to recover, reducing the chance of the bounce factor. Clearly well regarded to have been entered in a listed race despite being a maiden, this looks a good step in its progression.

2:40 York

1pt e/w Golden Apollo @ 17/2 Paddy Power 1/5th odds 5 places

Soft ground at York apparently which is surprising from a personal view having seen our first drop of rain down south today for over a month! That shouldn’t be a problem for my fancy Golden Apollo though who was third on soft at Ripon last year off a 5lb higher mark. Ran some solid races this year though with two of those runs over 7f, a trip that probably stretches it. Can find 6f too quick for it though so the softer ground should help it see the trip out. Beaten by the draw at Newcastle last time, it was the only horse drawn in the lower half of the draw to finish in the first 6 and one of only two to finish in the first 10! Is a course and distance winner who has slipped to an attractive mark and so looks a good bet.

2:45 Newcastle

1.5pt win Give It Some Teddy @ 9/2 Skybet

Backed this last time as I thought it would be well suited by the step up in trip and was in decent form. Finished third, though got left behind a bit in a strongly run race as the first two pulled well clear. However, that pair were in good form as well and both were carrying a 6lb penalty. Also, Give It Some Teddy was still 2 3/4 lengths ahead of the fourth. The drop back slightly in trip should help whilst it can compete off the same mark. It also gets to be partnered by the best jockey in the race and the only one who has ridden out their claim. This looks easier, be disappointing if its not close.

3:00 Ascot

1pt e/w Firmament @ 16/1 Bet365 1/4 odds first 5

1pt e/w Spanish City @ 14/1 Paddy Power 1/5th odds first 6

Firmament was well backed for the Bunbury Cup despite having shown little form this year. Ran with credit as well finishing 6th of the 30 runners though beaten under 2 lengths. Never got the best of passages and was also switched early to try race amongst the favourable bunch. Clearly the money suggested all was well with the horse and it is ready to go in again soon, especially as it is 9lb lower than when placing at York last year in a valuable handicap. Another 1lb lower here than last time it has plenty of form at the track plus it should benefit from being reunited from his regular jockey. I’m expecting a big run.

Spanish City is a horse we backed last time and landed us a place bet by finishing 2nd. That was over a mile where it hit the front too soon in my opinion, idling in front a bit up the Newmarket hill which therefore saw it picked up late by Burnt Sugar (Less said about that the better!). Travelled really well that day which saw it hit the front earlier than ideal. Now reunited with its regular jockey in Atzeni and still gets to race off the same mark (Due to go up 2lb), I don;t see why it shouldn’t run another excellent race.
