Early Bird – 9th June

Mixed bag today, started with advising Kalagia at 9/2 who went off as 5/2 favourite, got a little outpaced but ran on again for third. Seaport travelled well in front for a long way but got swamped in the final couple of furlongs. Epaulement though made all under a good ride and was never headed to give us another profit on the day.

2:30 Musselburgh – Caspian Prince & Dark Shot

Taking a couple in this sprint with horses who on their best would have a great chance. Caspian Prince is a course and distance winner who possesses plenty of pace and often takes this race in on its schedule. Led for a long while in the Epsom dash before fading late on from stall 2 with the main action taking place amongst those drawn high with 6 of the first 8 home drawn in a double figure stall. Was badly hampered as Just That Lord hung across it whilst the good to soft in places ground was definitely against it. Will appreciate the faster ground here as the horse barely stays 5f whilst a middle draw gives it options. Should find this race a little easier than last time, it has the ability to outrun its odds especially considering it was 4th last year off a 5lb higher mark.

Dark Shot surely has the ability to land one of these big 5f sprints. Used up too much energy early last time in my opinion whilst its place got closed off when the action increased, it was still running on again at the finish. A high draw may not be ideal though if ridden with more restraint this time then that should be less of an issue. Change of jockey may be a good idea and another good claimer has been booked. Bought with the intention of racing and being competitive in these types of sprints, it should be far away again.

3:05 Newmarket – Yafta

Was taken by its win at Newmarket on the Rowley mile course, travelling well despite no cover before battling well to reel in the leader to eventually win going away. Proven at this level, it does have to give weight to some unexposed rivals but they still have something to prove. Whereas with Yafta it has already shown what it is capable of and with it only receiving a 6lb rise in the weights then for me this is the one they all have to match up to.
