Form Guru – 16th May

Proud Archi returned place money at Beverley yesterday. Gamesome found only his stablemate too good at the same track and the day was put into profit when Laugharne won at Chepstow.

Today’s Selections:

2.55 – York:
Private Matter.  1.25 pts e/w. Available at 11/1. (Paddy Power, Betfair – 1/5 odds first 5)
Flying Pursuit. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 22/1. (Coral – 1/5 odds first 5)

There’s little doubt that Orion’s Bow is the best handicapped horse in this sprint and he made a promising reappearance at Pontefract last month. His back-form entitles him to plenty of respect, and it’s not surprising he heads the market, but he is short enough for a horse who hasn’t won for almost two years and there are plenty of viable alternatives in a very competitive race. Teruntum Star is tempting but at bigger prices Private Matter and Flying Pursuit are slightly preferred. Private Matter won a Listed race as a Juvenile but the consequences of that was he was lumbered with an extortionate mark for his three year old campaign. He tried his luck in two Listed races again at the start of last season but after running reasonably well in the first of them he was disappointing in the second. That left him with handicaps and he was always going to struggle starting off on a mark of 104. There were a few decent performances in the face of stiff tasks while his mark declined throughout the campaign. After looking in the need of his reappearance at Doncaster in March he went very close at the same track last month and runs from just one pound higher in the weights this afternoon. He is now down to a mark from which he can get very competitive and he could enjoy a good season now he has another year on his back. Flying Pursuit is closely weighted with Teruntum Star on their running here last October but is a much bigger price. He is a progressive C/D winner who thrives in this big field races. He is drawn close to the early pace and should get a good tow into the race. He would ideally prefer a bit of cut in the ground but his price more than compensates for that slight negative.

5.35 – York:
Okool. 2 pts win. Available at 7/1.
Je Suis Charlie. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 20/1. (Skybet – 1/5 odds first 5)
Visitant. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 33/1. (Skybet, Betfred, totesport.com, Betway – 1/5 odds first 5)

There are several in this race who are open to improvement but, at the relevant prices, preference is for Okool, Je Suis Charlie and Visitant. Okool has a progressive profile and, after just eight starts, there is likely more to come. He was suited by the step up to 12 furlongs on his final two starts last season and a mark of 85 is one which he can exploit at some point. He makes his seasonal reappearance but the yard have started the campaign on the front foot and it’s unlikely he has been left short for this. Je Suis Charlie was a five length winner over today’s trip at Catterick last season from seven pounds lower and was also placed in five starts of a nine race season. He was a close fifth over 14 furlongs here on his final start before being sold to current connections. He has run well in three starts over hurdles this year and he could still have some untapped potential on the flat. Softer ground would be ideal but he was a winner on fast going as a Juvenile. Visitant is unusual in a few respects. He is not really bred for today’s trip or fast ground. He has shown he handles the latter but has yet to race over this far. However he has been strong at the finish in a few of his races over shorter and gives the impression he could find a bit of improvement given a stiffer test. He is still relatively lightly raced but has won three of his ten starts so he knows how to get the job done.

8.05 – Perth:
Classical Sound. 2 pts win. Available at 7/1.
Forth Cave. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1.

8.35 – Perth – Maraweh. 2 pts win. Available at 15/2.
