Form Guru – 18th April

Only The Mighty Ash gave us a return yesterday when he was placed at Exeter

There’s two very good cards at both Newmarket and Cheltenham today but the former is mainly for watching whereas the latter contains some very tasty big field handicaps.

Today’s Selections:

1.50 – Newmarket – Aeolus. 1.25 pts e/w. Available at 10/1. (Betfred, totesport.com – 1/5 odds first 4)

It’s been almost three years since Aeolus last got his head in front but he has run some cracking races in better company than this since. He was last seen going close in a 22 runner Doncaster handicap in October  and runs from one pound lower this afternoon. He handles most ground and he is a strong finisher when he gets a good gallop to aim at. With the stalls on the far side the low numbers may be the place to be so he is handily drawn in stall 5 and the majority of the early pace is drawn nearby. He has a mixed record fresh but the yards A/W horses have been running well and their older sprint turf handicappers have a decent strike rate in recent seasons.

2.40 – Cheltenham:

Jameson. 1.5 pts win. Available at 9/1.

Art Of Payroll. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 18/1. (MarathonBet – 1/4 odds first 4)

A very competitive Handicap Chase in which a large number hold very valid claims for win purposes. A chance is taken on Jameson and Art Of Payroll. Jameson was beaten 17 lengths from today’s mark in the Close Brothers Handicap at the Festival and that wasn’t a bad effort considering it was his first exposure to a large field over fences. That experience won’t be lost on him and the balance of his early season form makes his current mark an attractive won with the possibility of further improvement to come. He will have no problem with the drying ground and today’s trip is ideal. Art Of Payroll hasn’t been with his current yard long but ran out a game winner on debut for them in a handicap at Southwell before disappointing back in Novice company at Uttoxeter. He has had a wind operation since then and it looks worth chancing that it works the trick and he can build on his previous performance. He goes well fresh and has back form that would see him potentially well treated on a mark of 140. The yard have won this race for the past two seasons and the booking of Bryan Cooper for his only ride of the day takes the eye.
