Form Guru – 18th August

Only Socialites Red gave us a return yesterday when she finished third at Nottingham. Both Abel Tasman (head) and Matewan (short head) went agonisingly close and Zeyzoun finished third at Newmarket.
Today’s Selections:

2.05 – Ripon – Holiday Magic. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1. (Skybet – 1/5 odds first 5)

Holiday Magic hasn’t won or even placed in 19 starts on turf so he isn’t an obvious candidate to get competitive in this consolation race for the Great Wilfred. He is a better horse on the A/W where he has been successful seven times all at seven furlongs or a mile and he may be seen to better effect at Kempton if he takers up his engagement there on Tuesday (has a decent record turned out quickly). However if he is ever going to win or make the frame over today’s trip on grass it will be in a race run at a generous pace. He looks highly likely to get that here in a race which doesn’t amount to much more than a Class 4 affair. He runs from a joint career low mark and won’t mind what the weather does. It’s difficult to say what effect the draw will have but, drawn in stall 12, he will have Red Pike (stall 12) and Handsome Dude (stall 15) to give him a tow into the race.

3.00 – Newbury:
Charles Molson. 1 pt e/w. Available at 12/1.
C Note. 1 pt e/w. Available at 12/1. (Generally available – 1/5 odds first 5)

There are some lightly raced potential improvers lurking in this race but we will side with two of the more exposed, established handicappers. Charles Molson is an old hand in this kind of race but, such is his consistency, he is hard to ignore. He was only beaten late on in a 27 runner race at Ascot last time out and this represents a drop in class from a one pound lower mark. He is likely to get the generous pace he needs to be seen at his best and the drying conditions are in his favour. The effect of the draw was inconclusive yesterday so his draw in stall 17 may not be disadvantageous. C Note caught the eye in the Golden Mile at Goodwood last time out. He had to use up a lot of fuel to get into a good position from his poor draw and he was still travelling well when he to the fore entering the final furlong. His exertions finally told late on and he faded into eighth. He was only beaten just over four lengths and the three pounds he drops takes him to a career low mark in a lesser race. The last time he was in this grade he won and he ran well on his only previous visit to this track.

3.15 – Ripon:
Golden Apollo. 1.5 pts win. Available at 9/1.
Marie Of Lyon. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1. (Generally available – 1/5 odds first 5)

Golden Apollo couldn’t get to his stablemate, Flying Pursuit, at York last time out but he could get his revenge on a track where he has run well on his previous two visits. He is up five pounds to a career high mark but the cheekpieces may help him eke out a bit more. He wouldn’t want the ground to dry out too much but that is the only concern for a horse who comes here on the back of a career best. Marie Of Lyon is the only Filly in this field. She looked likely to get involved in a very competitive Goodwood handicap last time out but her saddle slipped and she eventually finished in midfield. Prior to that she had been performing with credit in Listed/Group company and produced a career best under today’s jockey in June.

3.20 – Newmarket – Glen Coco. 0.75 pts e/w. available at 16/1.

4.00 – Doncaster – Compas Scoobie. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 14/1.

4.25 – Ripon – Frank Bridge. 1.5 pts win. Available at 9/1.

6.10 – Chepstow – Dodgy Bob. 1 pt e/w. available at 12/1.
