Yesterday ended in profit when both Afaak and Waiting For Ritchie ran out winners at York. Afaak quickened well to pick up the leader and win going away. Waiting For Ritchie was one of the first under the pump when the pace quickened but he showed guts and an admirable attitude to first get past those in front of him and then hold off all comers on the drive to the line.
2.45 – Newmarket – Curious Fox. 1 pt e/w. Available at 12/1.
Several of these are open to improvement and some lurk on potentially good marks. Curious Fox doesn’t have the recent form figures to inspire but the last time he encountered fast ground on turf he wasn’t beaten far on the July Course here from fifteen pounds higher than he runs from today. He was a winner, also on the July Course, last Summer from a ten pound higher mark and, although he hasn’t matched the best of his form last season on the A/W this year, it could be worth chancing that the return to quick conditions on turf signals an upturn in fortunes. The vast majority of his form has been over six furlongs but he has performed well on his only two previous attempts at today’s trip and he could have a bit of potential over it.
3.05 – Newbury – Kerrera. 1.5 pts win. Available at 9/1.
There are a few that appeal in this middle distance handicap but slight preference is for Kerrera. She made a satisfactory return at Wolverhampton last month and the Assessor has kindly dropped her two pounds for her effort. She has only been seen on turf twice and ran out an easy winner over this trip on the July Course at Newmarket in the second of them. She runs from just five pounds higher today and she has plenty of potential for further improvement. Both her outings on grass have been on good ground but she moves like a Mare who wouldn’t be inconvenienced by quicker conditions. There looks likely to be plenty of pace in this race, which will suit, and the booking of Adam Kirby is a positive.
