Long Call is the only runner to come into this race on the back of a victory. That win at Leicester over 10 furlongs was achieved in comfortable fashion and, being an Apprentices’ race he can run off the same mark here. That makes him officially six pounds ‘well in’ and he looks the one to beat under Oisin Murphy. Whether he is justifies a price of around 11/8 is debatable and he could be worth taking on. There are much safer conveyances in opposition than Astrobreeze, who is a maiden after six starts and has only beaten seven of her 51 opponents, but she has shown signs that there is ability there. Her mark has fallen 13 pounds in the space of three races and the form of her penultimate 4/5, beaten just under nine lengths, has worked out well. She ran better than her final positions suggests after meeting trouble over 14 furlongs at Wolverhampton last time out. She will need to better anything she has achieved so far if she is to get involved here but this trip could prove ideal and her dam recorded a win and a second from two starts at this track. Both the yard and the jockey have just the one entry today. She may well not be up to the task but with 66/1 on offer it doesn’t take a big stake to find out if she is.

3.40 – Redcar – Etikaal. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 40/1.

A wide open sprint handicap with many holding valid claims. At the relevant prices it may be worth giving outsider Etikaal small consideration. His recent form is not inspiring but his last three races have been slightly better affairs and he may have had valid excuses. The first came just four days after a previous outing and the last two have been on ground softer than ideal. Back under quicker conditions he is now one pound below the mark from which he won from over today’s trip at Pontefract five starts ago and he followed that with a close sixth over a furlong further from four pounds higher. He is unexposed over six furlongs, having just had the four previous races on faster ground or the A/W, and he acquitted himself really well on each occasion.

3.50 – Yarmouth. Case Key. 1.75 pts win. Available at 8/1.

Case Key’s form tailed off toward the end of last season and it’s been largely inconsistent this season but, even though he has returned just two decent efforts from seven starts in this campaign, one of them came last time out at Thirsk in a better race. That came on soft going but he is equally effective on fast ground and one of his best performances last season came over C/D when he went close last July. He goes without headgear today but his best performance this season came with no aids. Even though he is drawn on the wing of the field in stall one he is likely to be dropped in and the likely fast pace will suit.
