None of our selections gave us a return yesterday. Quick Look (second), Right Touch (fifth) and Granny Roz (fifth) all ran with credit at Ripon.
Therer are some very competitive handicaps across today’s cards and several have market leaders who look worth taking on.
2.40 – Ayr:
Think Ahead. 1.25 pts win. Available at 11/1.
Lough Kent. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 33/1. (Betfred, totesport.com, Boylesports, Betway – 1/5 odds first 4)
Dino Velvet and Demon D’Aunou head the market for this handicap hurdle and, along with bottom weight Our Lucas, they are open to further progression. However there are a couple of runners from the James Moffat yard at much bigger prices who look capable of getting involved. Think Ahead was a very useful flat horse for Godolphin a few seasons back and has run just three times over hurdles. After pulling up on his debut in Nov. 2016 he went on to win his second start, a Cartmel Maiden in soft ground nine months later. He wasn’t seen again until reappearing to finish second in a four runner race a month ago at Haydock. That form might not amount to much with the favourite taken out of the race by an errant runner but it’s still good enough, along with his earlier victory, to believe an opening mark of 116 here is one he can get competitive from. Quicker ground here will not inconvenience given his flat form and today’s jockey, who has been on board the last twice, has a very profitable 13% strike rate for the yard. Lough Kent is approaching veteran status but he showed he was in good order when winning a ‘Jumpers bumper’ at Newcastle last time out and he was a winner from just three pounds lower last Summer. That came under today’s seven pound claimer and she seems to get on very well with the horse.
4.45 – Ayr:
River Icon. 1 pt e/w. Available at 12/1.
Baby Ticker. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1.
This is a good Mares’ race over hurdles and 5/1 the field gives an indication of how open and competitive it is. Slight preference is for River Icon and Baby Ticker. River Icon has the profile of a horse who is still improving both over hurdles and on the flat. He is five pounds higher than when last seen winning over hurdles at Cartmel last Summer but he has showed himself to be in good heart on the level since and this return to quicker ground will suit him. He is a good traveller and looks the type to be suited by the pace he is likely to get in a filed of this size. He is in the hands of an under-rated Trainer who has a good strike rate at this track. He has the assistance of a very good three pound claimer. We supported Baby Ticker last time out at Haydock and she looked to be crying out for a much stiffer stamina test. She gets that with this marked step up in trip and, although she is normally seen on slower ground, she doesn’t have the action of a Mare who needs it to perform to her best.
5.15 – Ayr – Carlton Ryan. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 20/1. (Betfred, totesport.com – 1/5 odds first 5)
6.55 – Southwell – Dr Dunraven. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 20/1.
7.15 – Bath – Secret Potion. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1. (Betfair, Paddy Power, Betway – 1/5 odds first 4)
7.25 – Southwell – Oregon Gold. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 33/1. (Betfred, totesport.com – 1/5 odds first 4)
