Saturday finished in profit when Humbert placed at Doncaster and Roksana was successful at Newbury.
3.05 – Huntingdon – Road To Rome. 1.5 pts win. Available at 15/2.
Although the marked drift in his early morning price is a bit disconcerting preference is still for Road To Rome in this near 20 furlong Handicap Chase. He returned from a two month break to make his debut over fences at Ludlow last month and failed by just a neck to break his maiden status on his tenth start. He entered that Novices’ Handicap over two miles on a mark of 107 and run from just two pounds higher this afternoon. His jumping was understandably ‘iffy’ at times but the experience will not be lost on him and subsequent victories for the third and fourth give the form some substance. He steps back up in trip here and he has always run as though a stiffer test would suit in time. He is still lightly raced and has the time and potential to improve in this sphere. The yard have recorded two victories, three seconds, and a fifth in the Coral Cup, from their last six completed entries and they have a profitable 17% strike rate here with their Chasers.
3.15 – Market Rasen – Royal Beekeeper. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 33/1.
This is an open Handicap Hurdle and it may pay to take a speculative punt to a small stake on the outsider of the field, Royal Beekeeper. He has to shoulder topweight and he will have to perform a whole better than he has done on his last four starts. They have seen him pull up at Warwick last time out and beaten out of sight in three outings prior to that. However they have all come in testing conditions and, although he performed better in soft ground on his debut for current connections, his best for for his former yard came on ground no worse than good to soft. His two victories under rules have come in Selling/Claiming grade but he is now on a career low mark and he is still only a five year old with eleven starts behind him. He won both his completed starts in the Pointing field and has shown enough to believe he can make his presence felt if the quickening ground brings him back to form. The booking of Paddy Brennan, who has a very profitable 24% strike rate at the track and a very profitable 15% strike rate for the yard, takes the eye.
