Only Nonios gave us a return yesterday when he was placed at Newcastle (advised to 4 places).
2.00 – Doncaster – Wind In My Sails. 3.5 pts win. Available at 3/1.
We supported Wind In My Sails in a better race than this at Newbury last time out and his one and a quarter length third of the fourteen runners entitles him to plenty of respect dropped in grade. The form of that race has been boosted by the second who subsequently finished second in a 0-90 handicap at Redcar. Without the hood for the first time in eight starts, Wind In My Sails travelled well through the race at Newbury and was just found out by probably better horses quickening in the latter stages. He runs from a one pound lower mark this afternoon and the booking of Adam Kirby, who is here for one Clive Cox entry and takes his only other ride ride in this race before leaving for Newmarket, takes the eye. Good ground or faster suits and three of his best four performances on turf have come over a straight mile (all at Newbury). The yard are in good form and send just the one on the near 300 mile round trip from their Herefordshire base.
6.55 – Newcastle – Kreb’s Cycle. 1.5 pts e/w. Available at 8/1. (Generally available – 1/5 odds first 4)
A good prize for this Class 4 Handicap has attracted a competitive field. Although being drawn in stall one is far from ideal, Kreb’s Cycle may be worth chancing. He was well beaten at Beverley last time out but that run may have been needed after a 74 day break and he could be seen in a better light with that run behind him. He disappointed when last seen here over today’s trip but had gone close over seven furlongs ten days earlier on his first of two visits. His two beat career efforts on the A/W came on the Tapeta at Wolverhampton over an extended 8/9 furlongs so, as well as handling the surface, his ability to stay a bit further is always an asset on this stiff track. He is still feasibly weighted, having gone close from a pound higher three starts ago, and he represents an in-form yard who have a profitable 23% strike rate here in recent seasons. The booking of Andre Antzeni, who is an unusual booking for the yard, is eye-catching.
