Kreb’s Cycle was just run out of the frame late on at Newcastle. Our other selections, Wind In My Sails, Dakota Gold and Hakam all failed to get involved from off the pace in their respective races.
12.55 – Newcastle – Dream Of Dreams. 2 pts win. Available at 11/2.
The only Group race on Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate card is a Group Three sprint over six furlongs. Kimbrella just shades favouritism and he still retains plenty of ability at eight years old. He was a close third in this race last season and can be regarded as slightly unlucky. He runs from the same mark and if he gets to the front early on, he could prove difficult to overhaul. However both Dream Of Dreams and Top Score take the eye with slight preference for the former. Dream Of Dreams makes his A/W debut here this afternoon but it’s likely that he will be suited better to the slower Tapeta surface rather than a polytrack given he likes to get his toe in on. He was below par last time out in this grade at Newmarket but that was probably needed on the back of a 159 day break. although a subsequent ten week absence is a small concern. Prior to his last run, an easy defeat of Mutawathea at Lingfield, a close fifth to Tabarrak at Newbury and a one length defeat of Perfect Pasture at Doncaster are all performances which would see him get competitive here if he were to repeat them. Represents a powerful yard in red hot form who have a very profitable 40% strike rate (6 from 15) at this track in recent seasons.
1.30 – Newcastle – Chocolate Box. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 22/1. (Skybet – 1/5 odds first 6)
The consolation race for the following Northumberland Cup and, arguably, just as competitive. Bedrock was placed in Grade One company over hurdles in April and has improved with each of three starts on the flat since. On just his second start over two miles on the level he ran out an easy winner at Musselburgh last time out, hitting the line hard in the process. He is officially three pounds well in under his penalty and he may have even more in hand than that. However he will need plenty of luck from stall 20 and a single figure price doesn’t appear overly generous. At a huge price, Chocolate Box makes some appeal. He has produced career beat efforts in his three starts for his current handler since being sold and changing yards last November. He beat Sam Missile by just over three lengths over two miles at Chelmsford from a mark of 80 on his first start and followed that with a near three length fourth to Amazing Red (well fancied for the Plate) from five pound higher over the same trip at Kempton. He saved his best for last time out where he went down narrowly to Waiting For Ritchie and Denmead from a mark of 85 over an extended two miles at York. Denmead has since won, giving the form a bit of substance. Chocolate Box is still relatively unexposed over today’s trip, this being just his fifth start over around two miles. He runs from the same mark of 85, has experience of this track and could be well drawn in stall two if he gets racing room.
