Only Mythical Madness gave us a return yesterday when he finished placed in the Golden Mile at Goodwood. In the same race Escobar was stopped more times than a driver on the M25 in rush hour and Hors De Combat only just missed out on making the frame. On the same card One Master ran well to finish fourth from a poor draw.
1.50 – Goodwood:
Related. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 18/1. (Skybet – 1/5 odds first 7)
Parnassian. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 25/1. (Skybet – 1/5 odds first 7)
Goodwood’s card opens up with the Stewards’ Cup consolation race, a 22 runner cavalry charge. Given the going stick readings it may not pay to get too wrapped up in where it’s best to be drawn. There appears to be pace across the track so hopefully no bias will exist. Two at big prices that make some appeal are Related and Parnassian. Related is drawn in stall nine and he looked to be running into his peak turf form until he disappointed at Epsom last time out. He dwelt badly there and became outpaced so the effort can be forgiven. Prior to that he had placed twice at Doncaster over today’s trip on fast ground, only just failing on his penultimate start under today’s jockey. He has run well on five of his six previous visits to this track and this is his first time back here in nearly two years. He is not as good as he used to be but he retains enough ability to get competitive at this level. Parnassian is now ten pounds below the mark from which he won at Windsor last Summer and he is not the lost cause his odds seem to suggest. He wasn’t beaten far in his first three starts this season, two of them coming here over seven furlongs. He has been below that level of form on his last two starts but the stiff seven furlongs at Ascot and Sandown probably placed too much emphasis on stamina. Six furlongs or an easy seven suits him better and his experience of this track will hold him in good stead. He has no problems with fast ground and from stall 20 he should get a good tow into the race from Shepherd’s Purse in stall 23.
2.25 – Goodwood – Platitude. 1.25 pts e/w. Available at 10/1. (Generally available – 1/5 odds first 4)
There looks likely to be a good pace put to this staying handicap and that will suit Platitude who stays further than 14 furlongs. He was a winner over C/D on his seasonal reappearance and debut for his current yard in May and followed that by going close in a Listed race over two miles at Sandown earlier this month. He had some fair form to his name for Sir Michael Stoute last season and he handles ground on the fast and easy side of good. He is poorly off at the weights with Soldier In Action on their running in this race last season but that came in soft ground which favoured his rival much more than conditions will do today. Platitude was an easy win of a Listed race over C/D on fast ground back in August 2016 and he looks primed to return a similar performance this afternoon. If he does then he will get very competitive under Adam Kirby, who rides him for the first time.
