2018 Star Sports Greyhound Derby
Ante Post Portfolio
Final 2nd June EW terms 1st 6 1/4 odds
It’s time to get stuck into the ante post prices for the 2018 Star Sports Greyhound Derby.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of going for the front runners in the market, some deserve to be there and some don’t.
I will try to balance our portfolio with solid proven performers and also bigger priced contenders.
You also need a handler who is proven on the big stage.
After watching the inaugural Towcester Greyhound Derby it appeared to me that the rigours of the three quick rounds and the 500 metre trip where they actually run near 800 metres to the drop, you need to be a battle hardened second season dog.
It’s hard for young first season dogs to make hay in the Derby.
Also the 154 entries are very top heavy with railers so trap draws for them are going to be crucial and as a result it makes sense to have middle & wide runners to balance up your portfolio.
The draw is tomorrow and the action starts next weekend.
I have six or maybe seven selections for you in this years Derby….
Last year Mark Wallis’s Bruisers Bullet looked a real contender in the Derby but he bowed out in the Semi Final stage, where a lot of dogs can’t cope with the three quick runs Sat Tues Sat.
With a week off to recover between the semi and the consolation race, he won it in a quicker time than the Final. He’s had one or two slight injury issues and has been lightly raced this year and appeared that he had lost a little of his early pace. Some dogs do change there running style as they mature. But his trial stakes win at the weekend showed his early zip had returned and he clocked a fast time. It appears his little niggles have been ironed out and he looks in fine shape for his Derby campaign, little older and wiser this year.
He’s my first selection at 25/1 (Rails Runner)
*Pat Buckley’s come close several times to winning the English Derby and he always brings a strong team – his best chance IMO would be the Con Kirby winner Droopys Davy He is one I want to have on my team but I want to see how he trials tonight before racing before betting him……not all dogs act round Towcester and I want to see him with my own eyes before parting with my and your hard cash!! He’s a 25/1 shot at present – so hold fire until I see him trial
I will send an email straight away after the trial if he’s a bet….or not…..
Going against what I said earlier about first season dogs Matt Dartnall’s Rising Brandy really impressed me when winning the Monmore Puppy Derby, so much so I availed myself of a 66/1 voucher. Admittedly it wasn’t a vintage competition but he could only beat what was put in front of him. He did it as an Unraced pup and his trainer hadn’t even seen him run under lights and in sure is still getting to know him.
He’s since trialled well at Towcester and he won his trial stake at the week end comfortably.
I’m sure there’s more to come from him, he may well blossom during the Derby.
He’s my second selection at 25/1. (Rails Runner)
Another battle hardened dog and major competition winner in Ireland is Graham Holland’s Clonbrien Hero. I think this is Graham Holland’s best chance in the Derby. He’s a proper completion dog and is one I want to have in my team.
He’s won the Irish Laurels, St Leger and the Night of Stars 550.
He ran Towcester well in his trial when he was able to give Shotgun Bullet a start and a beating!
He trials again this morning after racing.
The 50/1 available may well turn out to be extremely good value come Final night!
He’s my fourth selection. (Wide Runner)
Another second season battle hardened & major competition dog I want on my team is Pat Rosney’s Laurels & Scottish Derby winner The Other Reg.
He ran well for a couple of rounds last year but is mich more the finished article this year. I expect him to go really deep into this Derby and he’s attractively priced at 66/1.
He’s my fifth selection. (Middle Runner)
Another second season dog I have to have on my team is Carol Weatherall’s Calico Brandy who won the Puppy Race on Final night last year. He isn’t the quickest into stride and as a result can encounter traffic problems but granted a clear run he will keep qualifying as nothing comes home stronger. He’s a wide runner and as a result will keep getting his trap.
He’s a 66/1 shot. (Wide Runner)
Last but not least at a much bigger price of 200/1 I couldn’t let Paul Young’s lightly raced Bubbly Big Eddie go unbacked. He caught my eye back running Droopys Polly recently in a trial stake and then ran on strongly coming a close up fourth behind Black Farren in the Trainer’s Championship. He’s one who could go a few rounds and then you never know!
