Only Lucky Lodge gave us a return yesterday when he finished fourth at Thirsk. Our other selection in the same race, Peachey Carnehan, was one place ahead in third, beaten just under two lengths. At Ffos Las Duration finished fifth and Katabika sixth in the same race. Duration may be of interest once he steps up in trip. The Pinto Kid was slightly disappointing on his handicap debut, finishing sixth at Nottingham. Dominannie was beaten eleven lengths into tenth of the twelve runners at Thirsk. She is a low quality Mare but there’s something about her that says she will cause a shock one day at a big price.
3.50 – Newton Abbot – Cillian’s Well. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1.
Chantecler was a facile winner last time out but that was his first victory in 17 starts over hurdles so the form has to be at least questioned. It could be worth taking him on at a skinny looking price and, at much bigger odds, Cillian’s Well makes some appeal. He hasn’t been seen since last September and doesn’t have a good record fresh so, in normal circumstances, he wouldn’t have been top of the shortlist. However early money for him suggests he may be fit enough to get competitive and he certainly has the form to do so. His run of form between May and July last season from marks of 99-105 would see him in with a chance today and his last win came over an extended 18 furlongs on this track from today’s mark thirteen months ago. Drying conditions are in his favour and both victories on these shores have come under Claimers. Today he gets the assistance of one who is worth his five pounds and has a record of one from three on hurdlers at this track.
4.20 – Newton Abbot – Bogoss Du Perret. 2 pts win. Available at 8/1. (MarathonBet)
Several of these arrive here on the back of good efforts. At the relevant prices, slight preference is for Bogoss Du Perret. He makes just his sixth start over fences under rules and ran better than his finishing position suggests on his return at Worcester in June. He had taken it up at the eight but mistakes at the fourth and, in particular, the third from home knocked the stuffing out of him and he faded into sixth, beaten just over seven lengths. That was his first start for 221 days so it was likely it was needed. He should be sharper for that outing and the likely decent gallop in this race will suit a horse who stays further. A winner of three of his four Points he ran well on both visits to this track last season and he seems versatile regarding ground conditions.
