Form Guru – 17th July

Yesterday was one of those days. Luis Vaz De Torres was third at Ayr and Sir Fred only faded out of the frame in the latter stages at Wolverhampton. Midnight Warrior returned place money when he finished third at Ripon but Bobby Joe Legg produced a mullish display at Wolverhampton and looks one to avoid until he proves more tractable. The fortunes of our day were summed up by Nicholas T at Ayr. Travelling all over the field approaching the final furlong his jockey couldn’t find the gaps when needed them and he was eventually beaten a fast diminishing half a length.

Today’s Selections:

2.30 – Beverley – Donny Belle. 1.5 pts win. Available at 7/1.

Of the more exposed horses respect is given to Etienne Gerard, Groundworker and Mr Strutter but there are a few lighter raced types present who could be the answer. Arnold, Gorgeous General and Donny Belle all have something to recommend them at this level but slight preference is for the latter. Donny Belle is still a maiden after eight starts and she will need to better performance last time out at Nottingham. However she was slowly away there in a race which suited those at the head of affairs from an early stage so it may be best forgiven. Her effort at Catterick on her penultimate start when beaten two lengths into third has worked out well with subsequent victories for the first, second and fourth placed horses. She runs from a four pound lower mark here in a weaker race and Tom Eaves takes the ride again. The yard send just the one to the races today.

5.00 – Beverley – Kenmare River. 2.5 pts win. Available at 5/1.

Heirslookingatyou has gained his initial mark from racing at shorter trips and he is a potential improver now he steps up in distance on this handicap debut. It’s not surprising to see him at the head of the market but there are plenty of viable alternatives who may be capable of similar progression. Of those slight preference is for Kenmare River who has hinted that he has yet to produce what he is truly capable of. He has dropped eight pounds since entering handicap company two starts ago and that could be an over-reaction by the Assessor. He was well beaten on his handicap debut over an extended mile at Nottingham but ran much better than his midfield finish suggests over a mile at Ripon last time out. He blew the start and met trouble in running but still finished to some effect. He was an unconsidered 50/1 shot so there was plenty of promise in the performance. He is stepped up to ten furlongs today and, the stamina on his Dam’s side in particular suggests it should suit. The yard send just the one horse to the races today and he is ridden by a jockey who has had four wins and four seconds from his last eight rides
