Acadian Angel just missed out on a place at Ayr yesterday and Musharrif found one too good at Beverley. Iberica Road ran a shocker later at the same track but, back at Ayr, Mecca’s Spirit responded well to the first time blinkers and ran out a comfortable winner.
4.10 – Ffos Las:
Long John Silver. 3 pts win. Available at 7/2.
Cape Caster. 1.5 pts win. Available at 9/1.
We supported Long John Silver at Kempton last time out and to say he was given a less than inspired ride by Jamie Spencer would be an understatement. He finished the race hardly knowing he had been in one and his four and a quarter length beating didn’t represent his ability. That was over eleven furlongs and he takes a significant five furlong hike in distant today. His ability to stay the trip has to be taken on trust but the way he traveled through the Kempton race suggests not only could it be within reach, it could unlock improvement. This is just his sixth start and his in-form yard employ a three pound claimer who is riding well this season. At a bigger price Cape Caster could make his presence felt. He hasn’t been disgraced in two better races this season and he is now down to within two pounds of his winning mark. This is the first time he has raced over two miles on the flat but it promises to suit and the tongue tie he has worn on his last two starts is retained. He may prefer slower ground than this but he has won over fences under quick conditions so he may get away with it. The yard do well with their smaller flat string and they have had a 12/1 winner here (only sent seven entries in recent seasons) last Summer.
