Only Mountain Angel gave us a return on Saturday when he was placed at Sandown. Gamesome was again unlucky at Beverley, being hampered in the latter stages when finishing a close third.
6.00 – Windsor – Wiley Post. 3 pts win. Available at 100/30.
A good quality sprint handicap for the grade and none of the nine runners are dismissed readily. There looks likely to be a strong pace and that could set the race up for a closer. Bashiba fits that bill but Wiley Post is tactically versatile and is preferred. He has run a lifetime best on his last two starts and his five starts this season are among his eight best of a 22 race career. He had won two and been placed in two of his first four starts this season but his sixth, beaten one and half lengths, in a much better race over six furlongs here on his fifth and last start marked him down as a horse who is clearly thriving. He did best of those that raced prominently and he has been surprisingly dropped a pound on the back of that effort. He is equally effective over five or six furlongs and he runs this track very well. The yard are in very good form and they have employed the use of a top three pound claimer.
8.20 – Newcastle – Cherry Oak. 1 pt e/w. Available at 25/1. (Ladbrokes – 1/5 odds first 4)
The early market price of Another Angel is in free-fall and if he returns to his Juvenile form then he would be very well handicapped. However he has yet to prove he has trained on in three subsequent starts, even if there was a bit more promise over six furlongs here last time out. Cherry Oak is almost the outsider of this field but he could outrun his odds. He was a C/D winner from two pounds lower in March and he has a progressive profile on this track. It’s a similar story on turf until disappointing at Haydock after a two month break last time out. He wasn’t beaten far from a four pound lower mark when last seen over C/D and that form has worked out quite well. The booking of the in-form Graham Lee, who has a very profitable 13% strike rate for the yard this year, is a positive.
