Form Guru – 6th April

None of our selections gave us a return yesterday. Foxy Lady was running on late but could only manage third at Wolverhampton. Merhoob did likewise at Chelmsford and failed by just a head to reel in the winner. War Chief was slowly away and raced far too keenly when disappointing at the same track.

Today’s Selections:

2.05 – Fontwell – Westerbee. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 18/1.

A low grade handicap hurdle with a mostly exposed field. Recent form puts Be daring and Dragon Khan on the shortlist along with the veteran, Kastani Beach, who has a victory in heavy ground to his name. Amongst the lesser exposed hurdlers, Bee An Aristocrat, High Wells, Goldslinger and Welluptoscratch have all shown enough promise to believe there will be improvement at some point. However a chance is taken at a big price on Kastani Beach’s stablemate, Westerbee. She has just a Novice win to her name from eleven starts over the smaller obstacles and, since that victory, she hasn’t produced much of note in seven starts. The best was a well beaten third of five in the first time hood at Ffos Las fourteen months ago. She doesn’t help herself by racing too keenly and, although the hood never worked the second time from a results perspective, it came after a long break and it was noticeable that it did help her settle again. She is now eighteen pounds below the mark from which she entered handicap company and, if the hood does have the desired effect, she could make her presence felt in what is probably the weakest race she has contested. Her victory came in soft ground under today’s five pound claimer and she represents a yard in very good form.

4.15 – Fontwell – Robinsson. 1.5 pts win. Available at 8/1.

If Norman The Red repeats what he did in the Grade Two National Spirit Hurdle over 19 furlongs here last time out he will be very difficult to beat. It was his first run for John Long and that may have been the reason for the apparent improvement but it’s just as likely that he was flattered by the result. He was second and fourth in his two handicaps to date but he was well beaten both times and he runs from the same mark here. If he does prove to be a much improved horse then it’s kudos to his new Trainer but we will go with the ‘flattered’ side of the argument and support Robinnson. She is now eight years old but hasn’t stood much racing and makes just her ninth start this afternoon. Returning from a near two year absence she was a good third over this C/D in the first time cheekpieces last time out, understandably weakening in the closing stages to be beaten just over four lengths. She has been raised two pounds for that effort but her Novice form suggests a mark of 112 is one from which she can get competitive. Being a fragile Mare her ability to build on that last effort will have to be taken on trust but she has been given a forty day break and she could reward both her Trainer’s and owner’s patience.

4.30 – Lingfield – Six Strings. 2 pts win. Available at 9/2.

8.45 – Chelmsford – Yogiyogiyogi. 2 pts win. Available at 9/2.
