Form Guru – 8th September

Yesterday finished in profit when Nadine (Newcastle) and Blazed (Ascot) both returned place money and Cold Stare was successful at Haydock. Braes Of Lochalsh was just outside the frame in fourth at Musselburgh.
Today’s Selections:
2.45 – Ascot:
Mubtasim. 1.25 pts win. Available at 10/1.
Raising Sand. 1.25 pts win. Available at 12/1.
The first handicap on Ascot’s card is the Cunard over seven furlongs. It’s attracted a quality field with only the bottom four in the weights rated below 90 and five of the field rated 100 and above. Plenty arrive in good form, some are open to further improvement while others are on tempting marks should they return to their best. Previous form here (or at Kempton) normally holds up and should be viewed as a positive. Mubtasim doesn’t have the form figures this season to inspire but there have been a few notable efforts. One of those came at Chelmsford last time out where he kept on well late in the day to finish just over two lengths off the winner in fifth of the fifteen runners. He didn’t have much luck in running when finishing in midfield, beaten just over four lengths, over this C/D in a 27 runner handicap in July and he has fallen seven pounds in the weights since the start of the season. His first two performances of the campaign in a Conditions Race at Chelmsford and a Listed race at Haydock were good enough to make him a threat in this race off a mark of 100 and his other two visits here, both last season, saw him placed in Group Three company. Raising Sand almost always runs well here and is on the same mark as when finishing just under two lengths fourth in this race last season. He often handicaps himself by being tardy at the start but he is a strong traveller who responds well when he is put under pressure. He was beaten a long way in last at Sandown last time out but he can be seen to a lot better effect back on a track where has returned five of his best six career performances. The yard have a very profitable 20% strike rate here in recent seasons.
3.15 – Kempton – The Warrior. 1.5 pts e/w. Available at 9/1.
There’s little doubt that The Warrior should’ve won more races but, for a horse with a poor strike rate, his consistency here cannot be faulted. In six starts over C/D he has returned form figures of 214222, with all but one of those races coming in double figure fields. His only run here this year saw him produce a seasons’ best from an eight pound higher mark, going down narrowly to a subsequent winner. He was beaten half a length in this race last season from ten pounds higher in the weights and went even closer from 13 pounds higher on his final start of the year  so he is undeniably well handicapped should a return to this track spark him back to life. Getting weight from the rest of the field the risk looks worth taking from a decent draw
4.20 – Thirsk – My Name Is Rio. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 22/1.
4.30 – Ascot – Normandy Barriere. 1.5 pts e/w. Available at 9/1. (Betfair – 1/5 odds first 4)
5.05 – Ascot – Move In Time. 1.25 pts e/w. Available at 10/1. (Skybet, Coral, Ladbrokes, Boylesports – 1/5 odds first 4)
5.30 – Thirsk – Hawaam. 2 pts win. Available at 13/2
